We should not only clean our washing machine when the freshly washed laundry smells bad, because although detergent and water are used all the time, both the detergent drawer and the lint filter and the drum have to be cleaned. But what is the best way to do this and which home remedy is suitable for it? This is exactly what you will find out now.

Freshly washed laundry stinks, smells or smells?

Almost all of us have experienced this before. You look forward to the smell of freshly washed laundry and when you open the washing machine, you get a musty smell rather than a fresh smell. This is often because the washing machine was last cleaned a while ago.

Contrary to popular belief that a washing machine does not have to be cleaned separately because it is cleaned by the washing process anyway, it is absolutely necessary to clean the various parts.

Clean the washing machine properly

The various components come into contact with dirty laundry, detergent, fabric softener and also hard water. We should clean our washing machine properly so that too much dirt does not accumulate and bad smells develop as a result. Since nowadays we mostly work with low temperatures and little water in so-called eco modes, bacteria can collect and develop more easily because they are no longer killed during the wash cycle.

Tip: If you want to enjoy clean laundry for as long as possible, you should run a wash cycle at the highest temperature every now and then.

Clean drum and seals

First of all, we want to clean the seals and the drum in our washing machine. For this we take a clean cloth, moisten it and put a little washing-up liquid on it. Then wipe the drum with it, wipe it with a damp cloth and then dry it off.

A certain amount of dirt can also settle in the recess of the rubber seals. It is worthwhile to remove this from time to time with a paper towel or rag.

Clean the detergent drawer

From time to time there will be contamination and residues will remain in the dispenser compartment. That is why you should also clean the detergent compartment. Because detergent residues and the damp environment ensure that mold and bacteria can form.

Therefore, as described in the operating instructions, remove the detergent drawer from the machine. Now clean with hot water, a little vinegar and a brush. If you like, you can send it to the dishwasher for another round (without dishes, please).

Tip: Don’t forget to also clean the now open area in the washing machine.

Then reinsert the detergent compartment properly.

Clean the fluff filter

The sieve catches everything that shouldn’t get into the pump and thus fulfills an important purpose in the machine. However, you should clean the lint filter from time to time so that it does not clog. You can usually find it in the front, in the lower third, hidden under a round or square cover. Before removing the lid, put an absorbent rag / towel and a bowl underneath. There is always a little residual water that can run out when the cover flap is opened.

You should now discover the lint filter and remove it for cleaning. Clean the area inside the machine with a rag. Rinse the insert with running water and, depending on how dirty it is, use a brush. It is essential to ensure that the lint does not end up in the sink drain when you clean it.

Descale the washing machine

Another important point that you shouldn’t forget when cleaning the washing machine is descaling. Particular attention should be paid to this, especially in areas with very hard water. If you don’t know, ask your community about the hardness of the water. If the water is very soft, it is sufficient to descale the machine once a year. If it’s particularly tough, you should descale every three months.

Tip: washing powder often contains descaler. This is usually not the case with liquid detergents.

If you like, you can follow the recommendation of your washing machine manufacturer and buy the appropriate product. For those who prefer to use home remedies, I have listed a few of the most popular. But be careful, some are more suitable than others.

Home remedies for limescale deposits

Not every home remedy that is otherwise very helpful in combating limescale is also suitable for descaling the washing machine. It should be noted here that some agents can attack not only the lime residue, but also rubber seals, etc.

→ Vinegar doesn’t belong in the washing machine

. Adding vinegar is a popular choice. It is also advisable to add bad smells in the washing machine. But here one should be careful. Household vinegar or vinegar essence is helpful against limescale, but it also ensures that rubber seals etc. are attacked and thus can cause damage to the machine.

→ Citric acid is the product of choice Citric acid is

a much better home remedy here. It removes the limescale deposits, but is not harmful to the other components of the machine because it is not as aggressive.

→ Baking soda softens the water

Even though baking soda is a great and useful home remedy, the limescale deposits cannot get on the collar. Although it softens the water, it does not dissolve existing deposits. However, it is an absolute miracle cure for bad smells. If your laundry stinks, just add some baking soda and let it run at temperatures of at least 90 degrees (if your machine is otherwise clean).

Wash at high temperatures

Another important point that the washing machine can clean is a high temperature wash. As already mentioned, washing in Eco mode at temperatures below 60 degrees is not enough to kill bacteria and germs. That’s why you should always do a wash cycle with at least 90 degrees. In this case, it doesn’t matter whether you do this with a load of laundry that can drop such temperatures or when you are idling.

Prevent mold and fungal growth

If you want to enjoy good-smelling laundry for a long time, then you should consider a few other points in addition to cleaning the washing machine. That’s why I have a few good tips for you to prevent mold and Co. from developing in the first place.

Leave the detergent drawer
and door open
So that the various components can dry between wash cycles, it is
advisable to leave both the detergent drawer and the washing machine
door open after the wash cycle. This means that a moist environment cannot easily form.
Better washing powder
than liquid detergent
As confirmed several times by Stiftung Warentest, it is better to use
powder than liquid detergent. The ingredients in the powder ensure
that dirt is not as easily left behind as with liquid detergent
Avoid fabric softenersFor those who love fabric softeners, this is probably not so great to
hear. But it contains beef fat, which makes the fibers nice and soft, but
at the same time is a great base and breeding ground for bacteria and germs.

If in doubt, simply follow the information in your operating manual or the manufacturer’s recommendations.
