It gives your eyes so much more expression, but only if you know how to apply the eyeliner. In this post I would like to show you what you should pay attention to and how to draw the perfect eyeliner. And don’t worry, even as a beginner, you will find lots of useful information here that will help you make up your eyes.

What is Eyeliner?

With the eyeliner you pull your eyeliner. It gives the eyes more expressiveness and emphasizes them visually. There are basically three different types of eyeliner:

  • Gel eyeliner,
  • Liquid eyeliner,
  • Eyeliner pen / kohl.

Everyone has their advantages, but also certain disadvantages.

The Different Types of Eyeliner:

There is no general answer to which eyeliner is best. The one you cope with best is the best. And that means trying it out. Some people find it easier to use a pen, while others use the liquid version. I would now like to briefly list the advantages and differences of the individual species.

Eyeliner TypesAdvantagesDisadvantage
Gel Eyeliner
  • Creamy and easy to apply
  • No getting lost,
  • Good opacity,
  • Long durability,
  • Very productive,
  • Easy to use.
  • Expensive,
  • Additional brush necessary.
  • Depending on the size of the jelly, the gel eyeliner can dry out quickly.
Liquid Eyeliner
  • Good durability,
  • Beautiful shine,
  • Good contrast on the lid,
  • Precise edges.
  • Gotta dry
  • Can smear easily when applied,
  • More difficult for beginners to use,
  • Can stick the eyelashes together.
Eyeliner pen / kohl
  • Large selection of colors,
  • Applicable in the outer and inner lid,
  • Good blending possible after application.
  • Sharpener necessary,
  • No shine like the other eyeliner types,
  • Do not last that long and have to be reworked earlier.
  • Precise edges are hardly possible.

I personally prefer liquid eyeliner because I like the precise edges. But that’s a matter of taste.

Tip: In hot temperatures, it is worth storing the kohl in the fridge.

The Perfect Eyeliner

But what does the perfect eyeliner look like? It is ideally drawn when it emphasizes your eyes well without making them appear too small or squat. Especially for beginners, it is difficult at the beginning to draw straight and precise eyeliner. But practice also makes perfect here, which is why you shouldn’t give up after the first failed attempt. At the end of the post, I have a few tips for you on how to draw the perfect eyeliner as a beginner.

The Perfect Eyeliner

Which Eyeliner for Which Eye Shape?

Depending on the shape of your eyes, you should emphasize different areas. If you have big eyes, you have the great advantage that the eyes cannot be made up with small make-up and therefore you have free choice when emphasizing the eyelids. It is different if you have naturally small eyes or drooping eyelids.

So that you know which eyeliner is suitable for which eye shape, I would like to show you a few examples.

Make-up Eyelids

At drooping eyelids eyeliner should only be applied to the upper eye, since an additional blank would appear smaller the eye at the lower eyelid. Pull it as close as possible to the lash line, taking care not to apply the eyeliner too thick. Especially with the drooping eyelid it can quickly become too much and the eyes look squat.

Raise the falling corners of the eyes

If you have sloping corners of the eye, then the right eyeliner is about visually opening and lifting your eyes. In addition to working with light eye shadow as a highlight, you should only pull the eyeliner along the upper eyelid. It is best to start in the middle of the eye so that you have a beautiful arch that reaches its peak in the middle and thus opens the eye optically.

Apply eyeliner to round eyes

If you have a round eye shape, the goal is to make it appear a little more almond shaped. To do this, it is helpful to simply pull the eyeliner out over the eye and thus widen it visually. When applying eyeliner, pay attention to a nice curve on the outer eyelid, because this opens your eye and makes it look more almond-shaped. If you want it to be a bit more subtle, it also helps to let the upper and lower eyelid lines converge at the outer corner of the eye and blend them slightly.

Draw a line for beginners

Are you a beginner and don’t really know how to draw the eyeliner? Or have you tried it x times and it just doesn’t work? Then I have a few tips for you here that will make applying the eyeliner easier. But before we get to that, I want to explain a few basic things to you.

Make up waterline

The inside of the eyelid is called the water line. Depending on the shape of your eyes and how intense your make-up should be, you can also apply makeup to the waterline with a kohl pencil. You should make sure that the kohl is waterproof.

The first time you do it, your eyes may water. This is perfectly normal, because it takes a little time to get used to a touch at this point. Under no circumstances should you use anything other than kohl for this.

When applying makeup to the water line, you should make sure that black lines that are too strong, especially in the lower lid, visually reduce the size of the eye.

Eyeliner and eyeliner tips for beginners

Here I would like to give you a few tips that will help you draw the perfect eyeliner. Here we go.

  1. Always pull the eyeliner directly along the lash line. No space in between must be visible.
  2. If you sit down at a table, put up a mirror and then support your elbow on the table top, drawing a straight line is easier for beginners.
  3. For beginners, it is recommended to use kohl. Small mistakes are easier to correct here with a cotton swab and you have a better feeling when drawing the line.
  4. Draw a few dots along your eyelash wreath, which you can easily connect.
  5. You don’t have to pull the eyeliner in one. If it is easier for you, start in the middle of your eye and pull it first to the outer edge of the eye and then to the inside.
  6. An eye shadow as a base always ensures better durability of the eyeliner. If you want a subtle make-up, just choose a light eye shadow that visually opens the eye.
  7. Try to close your eye halfway and raise your eyebrow slightly. This is the best way to apply the eyeliner.

As with any make-up, the same applies to the eyeliner, what is allowed is allowed. I hope my tips help you that you can skillfully stage your eyes and no longer despair on the eyeliner.
